On Thursday, February 8, 2018, Fr. Dan Scheidt, pastor of St. Vincent de Paul, along with BIP members, and parishioners from several parishes met at St. Vincent de Paul, FW to discuss ways in which we can make our faith communities welcoming to all.
Fr. Dan asked us to consider "How can what I have suffered bear fruit?"
He asked us to be the "salt, light and leaven" that Jesus asks us to be - these are all small things that tend to be overlooked but have huge impacts.
He said "It's not so much what the Church can do, it's what the Church can do with the people's help"
He shared "All parishioners have the need of 'Pastoral Care', or to feel like they're part of a community in their parish. We need to have people who will say, "How can I help you?"
He compared the efforts of BIP "cultivating our network" to Jesus sending out the apostles (we are the priests' arms and legs, as the apostles were to Jesus)
His suggestion for sharing a personal need with your pastor: "After Mass, spend two minutes introducing yourself, briefly mentioning your need, then hand him a letter with greater detail that says what you're hoping for. Combining personal contact with written out steps can help to start the process to obtain the goal. "
"We are from varied backgrounds coming together to help facilitate a more unified front. We are engaging with one another and on the same mission to ensure positive experiences and outcomes for Individuals with disabilities."
